Well Broncos fans it’s back to rooting for the Donkeys. The Broncos did not look good at all. The defense wasn’t great. Drew Lock and the offense were awful until the fourth quarter. Again. Pat Schurmur still can’t install an offensive game plan to save his life. If you just look at the score board you would think it was close, but it wasn’t.
If you watched the game you knew it wasn’t close. Most of the Broncos points came in garbage time. Late garbage time. Drew Lock has looked great late in games down 21 when teams are playing prevent defense. The defense was giving the receivers all kinds of space and it made for a bunch of easy completions and yards for Lock.
The Broncos defense was missing AJ Bouye and Bryce Callahan and boy were they missed. The Falcons offense was able to gash the Broncos secondary for most of the game. Unfortunately one of the few bright spots of the Broncos season didn’t show up like they usually do.
Broncos defense didn’t play well. But when they are constantly on the field because the offense goes three-and-out every series they’re going to get tired and play poorly. And that’s happening because Pat Schurmur has been god awful at play calling all year.
Schurmur has to realize that calling a run on second in long is a bad idea by now right? Right!? It’s absolutely maddening to watch the Broncos run on second and long every time. Then pick up 3 yards to set up third and long. And fail to convert more than half the time. Running on second and long does not work.
The Seahawks have almost entirely excised the 2nd and long run — aka the worst play in football — from their offense pic.twitter.com/ttsaqjjKgN— Computer Cowboy (@benbbaldwin) October 29, 2020
Look at the Broncos way down there at the bottom. Not going to be successful when you constantly call the worst play in football Pat.
Pat Schurmur has been awful at play calling all year for the Broncos. Drew Lock hasn’t played stellar either. But it’s Schurmur’s job to put Lock in a position to succeed. I don’t know who to blame most in this situation. Lock is still learning Schurmur’s offense. Yet at some point Lock has to either figure it out or Schurmer has to do a better job of calling plays that Lock can execute successfully. Neither are doing a great job at that. At least until the fourth quarter. Overall Lock has left me cautiously optimistic. Emphasis on cautiously.
Drew Lock's ESPN QBR today was 48.7. That ranks 19th of 24 QBs measured this week.— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) November 9, 2020

Those are not great stats. The first three quarters of the last two games have been almost unwatchable. Then the fourth quarter hits and Lock goes off. Lock has just looked so good in the fourth quarter the last two games. So so good. The fourth quarters of the last two games is the only thing keeping me cautiously optimistic about Drew Lock.
Maybe if the Broncos run the offense like they are down 14 they can play well. Lock is an SEC quarterback. He’s used to an up tempo offense, and Lock has played well in it. When the Broncos are down in the fourth quarter and the offense plays up tempo Lock plays better. Yeah the defenses are playing relaxed in the fourth quarter so it’s easier to gain yards. But Lock just looks more comfortable in an up tempo offense.
The Broncos just can’t wait until the fourth quarter to start putting together scoring drives on offense. They aren’t going to play teams notorious for blowing big leads in the fourth quarter every week. If the Broncos offense and Drew Lock could just play as well as they do in the fourth quarter all game they would be really damn good. But you don’t get to stop counting when it looks good for you. Not how it works.
Broncos lose to the Falcons 27-34. The Donkeys move to 3-5 on the season and play the 5-3 Raiders next in Las Vegas.
The special teams coordinator for the Broncos has also done a piss poor job. I don’t know what Tom McMahon thinks he’s doing calling a time out on a punt then turning around and sending the punter back out on the field anyways. What a waste of a timeout and a stupid fucking decision. McMahon is a buffoon and should have been canned after last year.
