JJ Watt and the Texans agree to part ways

Houston, I wanted you to hear this directly from me… pic.twitter.com/YqT3P6Lb6l — JJ Watt (@JJWatt) February 12, 2021

What a rough year for Houston sports fans. First Bill O’Brian traded away DeAndre Hopkins, then James Harden put on a bunch of weight to force a trade away from the Rockets, then Deshaun Watson publicly demanded a trade, and now the Texans and JJ Watt have agreed to part ways. And don’t forget the Houston Astros cheating scandal. Just an overall horrible year for Houston sports fans.

Although can you really blame JJ for wanting out of the Texans organization?

The Texans have been a dumpster fire all year. It started last offseason when Bill O’Brian traded away DeAndre Hopkins. Everyone thought that was going to be the worst or the worst for the Texans. Trading away a top level talent for next to nothing. But no. It couldn’t just end there. The Texans started the season off 0-4 and fired Bill O’Brian. Which at the time seemed like a great idea.

But Bill O’Brian being fired led to Jack Easterby being the man in charge. And that has been absolutely horrendous for the Texans. Bill O’Brian might actually deserve some credit for keeping the Texans as competitive as he did. Which wasn’t that competitive, but still. Bill deserves some credit for keeping the Texans where they were and doing something with trades and talent acquisition.

Because at least Bill O’Brian was trading away top tier talent for something. Jack Easterby just released JJ Watt, a 3X Defensive Player of the Year, for literally nothing. Sure the Texans saved $17 million in cap space, but someone would have wanted to trade for JJ Watt. Even if it was just a fourth round pick at least it would have been something. Instead the Texans let JJ Watt go just because he asked nicely and the Texans get nothing in return.
