TRADE ALERT ?: The Penguins have acquired forward Jonathan Gruden and a 2020 second-round draft pick (52nd overall) from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Matt Murray. pic.twitter.com/lag06QAFaU — Pittsburgh Penguins (@penguins) October 7, 2020
I figured that Matt Murray was going to be dealt to another team at some point this offseason. He’s been on the trading block since the Penguins early exit from the playoffs this year. The only real surprising thing is who traded to get Murray. The Sens. The Senators aren’t all that good, the best thing they did this year was bankrupt themselves paying for an Alex Trebek cameo to announce their first round draft pick.

The Senators now have a two time Stanley Cup champion goalie in their crease. Plus Murray is only 26 years old and has PLENTY of gas left in the tank. The Senators probably had to pay Trebek a pretty penny to announce their first round pick but they’re not actually bankrupt. They’ve got a ton of cap space to sign the restricted free agent goalie to a long term deal.
Personally I thought the Avalanche were going to trade for Murray. It seemed like a pipe dream for it to actually happen but it was a real possibility for quite some time. Now my dreams of Matt Murray in an Avalanche sweater are officially dead, long live the dream of the Avalanche signing Henrik Lundqvist and being a team of man rockets ?.
