THANK GOD. I was pulling for the Florida Panthers to get the first overall pick. Alexis Lafreniere would have been a great addition to Florida and would have helped build a fan base for the team. Instead the New York Rangers will be picking first overall for the first time since 1965. Sure they already have MVP candidate Artemi Panarin, and drafted Kaapo Kakko second overall last year, but at least Edmonton, Toronto, or Pittsburgh didn’t get the first overall pick. Getting booted from the playoffs with the amount of star power those three teams boast should be punished not rewarded. They’ll still pick much higher in this years draft than they would have if the season had played out normally, but once again they’re not picking first and that’s all that matters to me.
Alexis Lafreniere is going to be awesome in the Big Apple. The Rangers are going to be a very exciting team next season and I can’t wait to see how him and the team as a whole develop. Also very excited that the young stud will be playing for the Rangers and not a team in the Central Division. Looking at you Mild and Preds, I really would have hated to see you pick first. Just not as much as I would have hated to see Edmonton, Toronto, or Pittsburgh pick first overall.
